OPEN CALL FOR VIDEO ART PROJECTS

SPECULATION AND SPECTACLE

Curators Elisabeth Murray and Jonathan Brantley, in collaboration with from Rogue Video and Performance seek video art to be projected out-of-doors in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. This event will take place in the area beneath the  Brooklyn-Queens Expressway,  between Meeker and Union Avenues on May 3rd from 7:30pm until 9:30pm.

The exhibition, “Speculation and Spectacle” will address the theme of gentrification.  Submissions should respond to the following idea:

Gentrification can be defined as the displacement/replacement of lower-by-higherincome households, or expanded to address the wholesale transformation and transition of a city into a place of speculation and spectacle. As gentrification drives real estate prices to unprecedented levels, the inhabitants of these once overlooked and undesirable areas, both residential and mercantile, are removed and dislocated in favor of a new socio-economic class of people and business. The curators are interested in a public discourse on the matter of gentrification as a multi-faceted issue that can hold many different meanings depending on the stakeholder.

Gentrification has the ability to create a chaotic and conjectural environment; it also can create a renaissance of creativity, imagination, and lend to a burgeoning local economy in communities. How is gentrification an emotional experience? Is there an underlying tension, and if so, how is this tension manifested and expressed?

Gentrification can also call into question the idea of home. Is “home” just a place in which we lived over a period of time, or does it become engrained into how we identify ourselves? Are there traditions, places, and established cultures that we are trying to salvage? If gentrification transforms these places, can they no longer be called our home?

CALL FOR ART – Crossroads: A Shifting  Landscape

The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University seeks submissions for “Crossroads: A Shifting Landscape,” a multi-media group exhibition of contemporary landscape art curated by Jesse Gordon and Emily Ozga.  Submissions should address innovations in the landscape genre both visually and thematically, as well as through the use of alternative media.  The curators are particularly interested in work that addresses the natural world as well as urban landscapes, pushing the boundaries of traditional landscape painting.  The exhibition will emphasize the changing role of landscape art in the present day as a platform for socio- political discourse as opposed to a verisimilitude of the natural world.

Exhibition dates are January 17, 2012 through February 17, 2012. $15/5 entries.  Deadline: Wednesday, December 7, 2011 (receipt date).

PVS Gallery

49 Harrison Street
Hoboken, New Jersey

Come and join us for an amazing afternoon at PVS Gallery with featured Asbury based artist Porkchop.

As seen around Asbury and at local shore hot-spots as well as murals around Asbury Park…he’s now coming to give us a taste of his work in Hoboken, NJ

Porkchop creates works by imbuing vintage images with a dark twist. He creates intriguing scenarios by combining paint, illustration and text. In the past, he has exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe and is published in “The Greatest Erotic Art of Today”, Volume 2, “Eye Candy “and “I Want Your Skull.”

“I am intrigued by every aspect of the art making process; from finding and selecting the subject matter to making the frame and each step in between. Most inspiration for my work comes from retro photography of women. After the selection of the image, I then incorporate additional images and text to create a new story. From piece to piece the story changes, but the female figure is often the main character.”(Porkchop)

DREAM WORK
October 21st and 22nd 2011
Also featuring Thomas Heaphey, Ricardo Roig, Jason Swartwood and Robin Meyer

Oscar Lugo, from New York City, presents his studies and interpretations of dreams. It will be held at the Monroe Center for the Arts on 720 Monroe Street, Studio: C-304, Hoboken, NJ, 07030. The reception for the Exhibition will be held on October 22nd 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The Exhibition will also feature five established artists whose work is different, startling, intense and exciting.

Oscar Lugo will be presenting a collection of work based on dreams and nightmares. His paintings have a ‘fantastic realism’ and ‘dreamy’ tinge and understandably so, as he states: “At the age of 18, I began documenting my dreams by drawing or writing them. My paintings are based on my spiritual inclination and combination of dreams. I believe dreams are a true manifestation of the human psyche. We may not understand them right away but they are a window of information about ourselves. Dreams provide an endless supply of ideas and fields to explore that are born from both the conscious and subconscious.”

Oscar’s work shows and captures detail of energy and it lifts the imagination in a manner that is both intriguing and seductive, and sometimes disturbing, representing fantasies formally and literally, providing dramatic intensity into the window of reality showing who we are. He can take you to forbidden places.

His work will be on display at the Monroe Center for the Arts, Studio C-304 on October 21, 7 pm-10pm and October 22nd, 2 pm-10pm.
Parking free. Admission free. For more information call:
